Fees hike: Students call on Tinubu to intervene


The National Association of University Students, NAUS, has called on President Bola Tinubu go take urgent measures that can address the astronomical increase of school fees in various tertiary institutions across the country.

Its Osun State Campus Monitoring Committee lamented the recent increase of school fees of federal universities especially Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, by the school management adding that such will throw away many Nigerian youths out of school.

Addressing journalists at a press conference held at the Correspondents Chapel in Osogbo, Osun State capital, the President of NAUS, Me. Popoola Olayinka and the Secretary, Mr. Mr.Akin Okiji and other executives said that education is a right of of every citizen and never a privilege and as such, government must prioritize education and make it affordable.

Olayinka who said the association in conjunction with the OAU Students Union have given a 5-day ultimatum for the institution’s management to reverse the fees increase or face a mass action .

According to him, the other demands are closure of students payment portal and total suspension of any payment into the accounts of OAU until all demands are met.

While condemning recent communal killings at Ilesha, he urged the security agencies to rise up to the occasion and ensure the criminals are brought to justice. He called on the state government to address and resolve all communal crises among Osun communities .

On the subsidy palliative, the Association urged the federal and state governments to further roll out measure to cushion the effects as many Nigerians are facing serious challenges especially on food and transportation.

The union which noted that government cannot single handedly fund education suggested many ways in which schools should source funds to assist in funding education in Nigeria.

Some of the ways are Agriculture, and hydro electricity supply to university communities among others.
